What to Know about the Sanctuary

Drive about 30 minutes to Corolla, and you’ll come across the Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary. Found on a small road, the area, also called the Donal C. O’Brien, Jr. Sanctuary and Audobon Center, protects over 2,500 acres of marsh, sandy beaches, and upland maritime forest. The land for the preserve was donated in 1979, and Audubon North Carolina took over full management of the campus in 2009.

Today, the sanctuary is still mostly free from development, which allows the birds and wildlife to have a place to thrive without human disturbance. Unlike other natural attractions in the region, this spot is not open to the general public without reservations.

How to Experience Its Natural Beauty

There is countless Outer Banks wildlife to spot, including 170 bird species. You can enjoy the beauty of the Pine Island sanctuary and the animals that call it home without stepping foot on its grounds.

  • Walk along the 2.5-mile nature trail that follows the old dirt road between Corolla and Duck. This path offers views of twisted Live Oaks and a rare Red Bay Shrub swamp. There are two overlooks on the trail that provide visitors with sweeping views.
  • Another option is to take to the water by booking your spot on a kayak tour. Coastal Kayak provides tours from April through September that take you through the Currituck Sound on an over two-hour outing.
