Staying at Sea Ranch Resort means some of the top attractions the Northern Beaches have to offer are right around the corner. However, our resort is also the perfect home base for memorable Outer Banks day trips. After grabbing breakfast at Beachside Bistro, set off to explore some of the sights and spots that make this region such a popular vacation destination, including the wild horses that call the Outer Banks home.
What to Know About the Horses
Wild horses on the Outer Banks are found in Corolla, which is roughly a 45-minute drive from our hotel in Kill Devil Hills. This means you can easily add this adventure into your itinerary and still have time to relax on our stretch of beach when you return.
The horses are descendants of Spanish mustangs that have evolved into a breed known as Banker horses. They have been roaming the beaches of the Northern Outer Banks for over 400 years. They roam the northernmost beaches, particularly Carova Beach, Corolla, North Swan Beach, Penny’s Hill, and Currituck National Wildlife Refuge.
How to See Them
A great way to see these creatures is on a guided tour. Luckily, there are plenty of options so you can find the one that fits your schedule best. Here are three of our favorites.
- Wild Horse Adventure Tours offers an outing that lasts about two hours for up to 13 people. A seasoned guide will lead your excursion in an open-air vehicle. During your trip, view the horses in their natural environment as you venture into three different ecosystems.
- Reserve your spot with Corolla Wild Horse Tours, which has seating for 15 in its open-air safari-style truck. Also lasting two hours, this trip covers 25 miles of off-road cruising and takes you behind the dunes into the neighborhoods where horses graze.
- Since 1993, Back Country Safari Tours has been helping people see and learn about the Spanish mustangs. The open-air cruiser will cover 20 to 30 miles on North Beach while learning about these popular residents.
