Located across the Roanoke Sound from Nags Head is Roanoke Island, comprised of Wanchese and Manteo. Here, you can visit Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, where you can learn about the Lost Colony, or explore the Elizabethan Gardens, a 10-acre botanical garden featuring a statue dedicated to the first English child born in the New World.
Hatteras Island
Found south of our Kill Devil Hills resort is Hatteras Island. Reached via NC-12 through Cape Hatteras National Seashore, this more remote island is where you can find Rodanthe, Waves, Avon, Salvo, and Hatteras Village, to name a few. The Triangle, which is Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo, is one of the East Coast’s best kiteboarding spots. For breathtaking views, climb the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse; the lighthouse can be closed due to restoration efforts, so check the website for up-to-date information. Birdwatchers love the variety of species that call Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge home.
