Packing is probably the biggest chore of any family vacation. But with proper planning, a well thought out checklist, and a little forethought, you can prepare you and your family for your Outer Banks beach vacation with ease.
When packing for your stay in an Outer Banks oceanfront hotel it is important to remember the essentials. Swimsuits, of course, are a necessity, and it’s best to pack two for each person, so you’re not always waiting for one to dry or be cleaned. Also, you’ll need towels and appropriate footwear, such as flip flops, sandals, or water shoes. Sun hats, caps or light shirts, dresses, or shawls will offer some protection from the sun’s rays. Beach chairs, an umbrella, and a cooler stocked with drinks and snacks will insure you beach relaxation is comfortable and refreshing.

Bring a set of clothes for each day you intend to stay, plus a few extra for emergencies. Also when packing, plan for a variety of weather. Include light jackets or hooded sweatshirts with long pants for chilly nights. And you’ll find that comfortable walking shoes are better for sight-seeing than flip flops.

Packing for children should follow the same guidelines, but figure in for more accidents, so bring a few extra changes of clothes. Also bring toys or books along for entertainment value in those calm, quiet moments. It is ideal to have two different types of toys, those for the beach, and those for everywhere else. Beach toys can get sandy, and often disappear in the tides or under the sand, so you might want to keep them outside, and don’t bring anything valuable.

If you plan on bringing your pets, make sure to pack for them as well. A good lead or leash would be needed for any outings, and a doggie shirt or coat is recommended for those chilly evening walks down the beach. It’s best to bring their water and food dishes, as well as some of their own toys.

Aside from the basics, the Sea Ranch has you covered for your linen needs. Towels, soaps, and shampoos are available with every room. While suntan lotion and bug spray are essential to the beach, it is not necessary that you buy them before you leave. You can save yourself luggage room, and support the local economy, by buying a variety of local products that are made specifically for the area. For instance, a local, all natural, mineral sun block, BANXblock, was formulated by a Kitty Hawk plastic surgeon for locals that endure prolonged exposure to the sun. And Mo’s OBX Skeeter Beater, an all natural, no DEET, insect repellent has proven to be the best insect repellent in the world. Both of these products, and more, can be found at Made in the OBX shop in Kitty Hawk.
