No matter when you book your stay at Sea Ranch Resort, some of the best things to do take place in the Great Outdoors. Whether going for a horseback ride along the beach or casting your line with a local fishing charter, there’s plenty of fun to be had both on dry land and out on the water. For the best of both worlds, leave room in your itinerary to visit Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.
What Is the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge?
Established in 1938, the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge was created to provide habitat for migratory birds. This natural attraction also provides habitat and protection for several threatened and endangered species, such as loggerhead sea turtles. Found on the north end of Hatteras Island, the 5,000-acre space includes several examples of North Carolina nature and ecosystems, such as beaches, dunes, marshes, and brackish ponds.
What to Do during Your Visit
The drive from our Kill Devil Hills hotel to this North Carolina spot is only about 30 minutes, making it an easy day trip. We recommend giving yourself plenty of time to enjoy as many activities here as possible. With so much to do and see, this is one attraction you can visit every time you stay at our Outer Banks resort.
One of the most popular activities at this refuge is birdwatching. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded at Pea Island, including herons, egrets, bald eagles, and countless others. A great way to look for birds and learn about them is on the weekly Pea Island Bird Walk, which takes place every Friday at 8 a.m. Those interested in joining should meet at the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center.
Birdwatching is just one of the numerous activities available. Other popular things to do include:
- Hiking along one or all of the wildlife trails
- Casting your line surf-fishing or out on the ocean or sound
- Exploring the refuge’s scenery from the water on a motorized boat or a canoe or kayak
