Outer Banks Scenic Byway

The Outer Banks National Scenic Byway crosses Bodie, Hatteras, and Ocracoke island, between the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound. The path includes two ferry rides, one free between Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands and the other, longer toll ride between Ocracoke Island and Down East Cedar Island. The maritime culture of the coastal villages along the way is what makes this such a unique road. Each community shares a shared cultural heritage, which is shaped by the well-known islands barrier and three shallow sounds –Pamlico, Core, and Back. During the drive, you’ll notice a variety of locally owned businesses; locals will gladly share stories and services if you have any questions. Fishing and hunting are a crucial part of their culture, as well as significant national history, with a collection of the nation’s earliest civil works. Including four lighthouses, Bodie Island Lighthouse, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Ocracoke Village Lighthouse, and Cape Lookout National Seashore Lighthouse; and eight U.S. Coast Guard stations. On your drive through the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway, you’ll experience what life was like before hectic schedules and tourist-driven cities. The byway ends in Beaufort in the Down East region of North Carolina.
