One of the most quintessential things to enjoy during the summer is a day at the beach. However, before you can start soaking in the sunshine and playing in the surf, there are a few Outer Banks beach rules and etiquette you should be aware of.
1. Know the Rules for Tents and Canopies
One of the best ways to make your day at the beach even more enjoyable is with a tent, umbrella, or canopy. However, Kill Devil Hills beach laws prohibit beach equipment from being placed in such a way that prevents things like emergency vehicles from passing by. You are also not allowed to have your tent, umbrella, or canopy block the line of sight from a lifeguard stand to the water.
2. Be Mindful of Sea Turtles
One of the topics locals feel the most passionate about is sea turtles. These animals have nests that can be found from Corolla to Oregon Inlet. During nesting seasons, volunteers mark nests with stakes and tape. Please always be mindful of these markets and keep both children and pets away from them. You should also fill any holes you dig to help prevent baby turtles from falling into them. If you find a sea turtle on the beach, call the N.E.S.T 24-hour hotline at 252-441-8622.
3. Dog Rules
We know that four-legged friends love the beach as much as their humans. However, dogs are not permitted on the beach in Kill Devil Hills between May 15th and September 15th from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. If you bring your dog during permitted hours, they must remain on a leash. Rules can vary by town.
4. Other Things to Keep in Mind
- Glass and bonfires are not allowed on the beach in Kill Devil Hills.
- During certain times of year, to minimize using flashlights or cellphones near the water’s edge after dark. The bright, artificial light can deter female sea turtles from coming ashore to nest and disorient sea turtle hatchlings trying to make it to the water.
- Fireworks that explode or fly through the air are illegal.
- Always check the flag system before entering the water, and know what to do if you are caught in a rip current.
- Throw away any trash; you want to leave the beach the same way you found it.
